Laura E. Richards House
During the nineteenth century, Laura Elizabeth Richards was considered a great lady of letters in Gardiner, Maine. She was a poet and author who wrote more than 90 books. Her most famous collection of verse was Tirra Lirra: New Rhymes and Old. The book incorporated early verses from children’s magazines with new material. It sold more than 300,000 copies.
She was the daughter of eminent parents, Julia Ward Howe and Samuel Gridley Howe. She was a poet and social reformer. She moved to Gardiner, Maine, in 1876 and lived there until her death.
