Lewiston Maine is a Safe Place For Children

Located halfway between Portland, Maine and Augusta, Maine, Lewiston Maine is the second largest city in the state. It is located in Androscoggin County, and is part of the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area.

 

Main Street

During the mid-19th century, the area of Main Street in Lewiston, Maine was home to the city’s elite. Many of these properties are now part of Bates College. Some of the homes were designed by local architect George M. Coombs.

The area was also home to the Franklin Company, which owned much of the land in the area. The company built streets and laid out much of Lewiston. In the late 1840s, Roman Catholic services began in Lewiston. Several Lewiston churches were built during this period.

The first church built in Lewiston was St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, which was built between 1864 and 1867. The church is a Gothic Revival building. It is topped by an octagonal spire with a cross finial. The interior was decorated with stencil work. The church is now part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

Kora Shrine

Located in Lewiston, Maine, the Kora Shrine was established in 1891. This fraternal order is best known for its work with children. Its hospitals provide free medical care for children. In addition, they offer innovative research and teaching programs for medical professionals.

The Kora Shrine is one of the largest fraternal organizations in New Hampshire and New England. It has over 200 temples in the world. Its headquarters are located in the Kora Temple, a large red brick building with Moorish architectural influences. The building was added to the National Historic Register in 1975.

The Kora Temple was designed by a local architect, George M. Coombs, to resemble an ancient mosque. The building was constructed in 1908-1910. The three-story building has a Moorish architectural design, with an elaborate cornice spanning the front facade. The cornice is fashioned out of ornamental iron. The cornice consists of half-vaults surrounded by pointed niches, and copper-covered domes rest on short octagonal bases.

Located in the state of Maine, Lewiston Maine has one high school, three colleges, and four private schools. The population of Lewiston is 36,211 and the area of Lewiston is 35 square miles.

Lewiston Maine has an average four-year high school graduation rate that is below the state average. However, the five-year graduation rate is closer to the state average.

Lewiston is home to the Lewiston Regional Technical Center, which provides programs in automotive technology, culinary arts, and health careers. It is also the second largest vocational technical center in the state.

Lewiston’s high school has been on the receiving end of a chronic absenteeism rate that has remained relatively consistent at 35% since 2018. In addition to the chronic absenteeism rate, Lewiston High School experienced more than half of its students unable to attend school due to illness in 2021.

Lead screening rates

During the first round of testing, the Lewiston school district found lead levels in some water sources that were above the state threshold. Now, the school district will do more testing over the February break. It’s a standard that’s been tightened to ensure all children have access to safe drinking water.

Lead is a chemical that’s found in paint, dust, and pipes. It’s especially harmful to the developing nervous system of children, and it can cause permanent injury. It’s also known to cause behavioral problems, including hyperactivity and learning disabilities.

Lead is banned in the United States since 1978. However, lead paint is still present in many older homes in Maine.
