The Best Places to Stay on Cape Cod

Located on Cape Cod, Sandwich, Massachusetts is home to the oldest town on the entire Cape. The population of Sandwich is estimated at 20,259 at the 2020 census. It is also home to the Sandwich Glass Museum, a facility that hosts glass blowing demonstrations.

Historic buildings

Located on the scenic Shawme Pond, Sandwich is home to many historic buildings. The town grew from a small farming community to a thriving town of 20,000 people in just fifty years. The town motto is Post tot Naufracia Portus (after so many shipwrecks).

One of the oldest buildings in Sandwich is the Wing Fort House. Built in 1641, it has been owned by the Wing family for 380 years. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Another historic building in Sandwich is the Deacon Eldred House. This two-story colonial house was built in 1756 and still stands today. The town of Sandwich purchased the house in the late 1950s and has maintained it as a home since then. The house is located in the Town Hall Square.

Boardwalk

Originally built in 1875, the Sandwich Boardwalk is one of the most popular attractions in Sandwich. The boardwalk is over 1,350 feet long and provides breathtaking views of the Cape Cod Bay. It was recently named one of the top 10 boardwalks in the U.S. by National Geographic.

The boardwalk was originally constructed by Gustavus Howland. He received $500 from the town of Sandwich for the work. It was built over Mill Creek and the dunes.

The boardwalk has been damaged several times. Several storms have taken a toll on the structure. The planks used to construct the boardwalk were damaged by water, wind and ice.

The Sandwich Historical Commission met to discuss the status of the boardwalk. They also looked at possible designs for a new boardwalk.
