History

Located in northeastern Ohio, Alliance was formed by the merger of three small settlements. Those communities were Liberty, Freedom and Williamsport. The first white settlers to Alliance were Quakers from Virginia in 1805. These three communities developed along two major railroads. The name Alliance was derived from the intersection of the Cleveland & Pennsylvania railroads.

The area was occupied by Hopewell Native Americans, who built mounds along the Mahoning River. The Hopewells relied on agriculture for their survival. The Hopewells eventually merged with the Williams Teeters and Liberty communities to form Alliance.

In 1850, the three settlements were incorporated into a single city. Freedom was located in the center of Alliance. It was bounded by Wayne Street, Walnut Avenue and Vine Street. The city became a station on the Underground Railroad. Several more small settlements grew up in the years leading up to the Civil War.
